Electric Guitar Amplifiers

Electric guitars need amplifiers to get any meaningful sound out of them at all, and are essential when you are using techniques such as bending, hammer-ons and vibrato. You can just about practice on the strength of the puny sound which comes out of an unamplified electric guitar, but for playing they are no use at all without some means of amplification.

Do you need one of the big amps you see behind your favourite guitarists on stage, though, if you are just going to be in your bedroom? Yes, they still sound good in a bedroom, just try to remember the neighbours in the next street!

They can all be turned down to a suitable level to suit the venue, they all go from one to ten, or to eleven if you are a Spinal Tap fan! So, get the best amplifier you can afford, you never know, you might need it quite soon.

Remember, though, you can plug guitars into hi-fi systems if there are suitable inputs, and into the sound card of your computer. A great set-up for practising at home is to plug the guitar into an effects processor, and play the output from the processor through your computer.

We will always want to buy an amplifier, though. The small, cheap amps, some of which come with guitar packages, are quite adequate for beginners. In fact, soime of them are made by the same people who make professional models. There are amps in all price ranges, it is quite possible to get a Marshall, Fender or Vox amp at an affordable price.

Early amps used valves, just as early televisions and hi-fis did, and many players still prefer the mellow tone of a valve amp. The more modern transistor models can sound a little harsher, although some have settings designed to emulate the old valve models and the new ones have a greater range of features and settings.
