Gibson SG Guitars - ever wondered?

Ever wondered why Gibson SG guitars are called SG? Does SG have some deep and important meaning?

Well, it has a meaning, how deep it is we leave you to judge.

In the early 1960s sales of the Gibson Les Paul models were drifting towards the lower end of the graph and management thought they had better do something to make the guitars up to the minute and saleable again.

They decided to give them a sharp and sexy name, the Gibson SG.

This masterpiece of marketing involved discarding the revered name of one of the legends responsible for developing the whole modern guitar industry, the great Les Paul and re-branding his legacy the Solid Guitar!

Yes, that is what SG stands for - solid guitar, you wouldn't believe it, would you.

Fortunately, his name lives on.
